Carrie Colbert, founding & general partner of Curate Capital joined the Cherub team for a lively discussion on due diligence — what makes an investor say ‘yes’ to the check, red flags to look out for, and when to go with your gut.
The top takeaways:
Build Trust > Transaction. Build a relationship with founders before investing to help uncover potential red flags. Due diligence should happen only after your ‘gut’ gives you a resounding yes, not the other way around.
Scrutinize the margins. Revenue is just a part of the story. Take a look at how efficiently the team spends to understand how many dollars each one you put in will help them generate.
Take more shots. Just like any investment portfolio, diversifying your bets is key. If you’re just starting out, write lots of smaller checks to gain valuable insight.
Know your exit. Make sure the founder thinks strategically about their way out. Research the types of multiples for the industry and comparables so you can get a sense of what to expect if the team has what it takes to ‘win.’
